Follow simple precautions and common sense when performing yard work. Here are some safety tips to consider when working outside:
- In general, do not use any power equipment in wet conditions to avoid slipping
- Follow directions for use that come with equipment and herbicide application
- Take your time – it's better to be careful and avoid injury than to be fast
According to the Insurance Information Institute, each year nearly 75,000 people are seriously injured by lawn movers with the majority of injuries resulting from human error.
- Know how to quickly turn off your mower in case of emergency
- Check and clear your yard of rocks, sticks and other debris before you begin to mow
- Never leave a running lawn mower unintended
- Never attempt to unclog or work on a lawnmower while the engine is running
- Keep young children away from the mower
- Wear eye protection when using a trimmer
- Check the trimmer for any damage or leakage before using
- Exercise safety when removing debris from gutters or cutting branches that are high up
- When using axes or chainsaws, wear steel-toed boots, heavy gloves, tight-fitting clothing (long pants and a long-sleeved shirt), and safety glasses
- If using electrical devices, make sure the ON/OFF switch is in the OFF position before it is plugging into an outlet
